Christian Leaders Issue 'A Call of Christian Conscience'
Nov. 21, 2009 - The Manhattan Declaration, a bold new declaration, signed initially by 125 evangelical, Catholic, and Orthodox leaders, calls for Christians to adhere to three primary convictions, even if this requires civil disobedience. - Charles Colson, who helped draft the declaration, said the statement brings Christian leaders together on the issues of abortion, marriage, and religious freedom in the face of growing pressure.

Nigerian Islamist attacks spread
July 27, 2009 - In Nigeria, which is approximately half Christian and half Muslim, about 150 Christians have been killed by Islamic militants. Most of the attacks have occured in Maiduguri, Borno State. Hundreds are fleeing their homes. - Some of the militants follow a preacher who campaigns against Western schools. The preacher, Mohammed Yusuf, says Western education is against Islamic teaching.

Activists claim Christian executed in N Korea
July 24, 2009 - Ri Hyon Ok, a North Korean woman, was publicly executed for distributing the Bible, which is banned in the communist nation. She was also accused of spying for South Korea and the United States and organizing dissidents. Her parents, husband and three children were sent to a political prison camp in the northeastern city of Hoeryong the following day,- Source: AP

Matches House-approved plan to crack down on biblical teachings
May 2, 2009 - Following approval of H.R. 1913 by the House of Representatives yesterday, Senators Edward Kennedy and Patrick Leahy have introduced a Senate version of the bill. - It adds gay, lesbian, and transgender people to the list of federally protected classes. But critics warn it could also criminalize preachers, who preach against homosexuality.

Homeland Security on guard for 'right-wing extremists'
Apr. 13, 2009 - A new Homeland Security document puts authorities on the look-out for trouble from unnamed "right-wing extremists." While admitting that their acitivites, "have been largely rhetorical and have not indicated plans to carry out violent acts," the report says that those concerned about illegal immigration, increasing federal power, restrictions on firearms, abortion and the loss of U.S. sovereignty may become violent in the future.The description of "right-wing extremists includes: - Hate groups opposed to particular religions or races
- Anti-government groups that reject federal authority in favor of state or local authority
- Individuals who are dedicated to a single issue, such as opposition to abortion or immigration
- Some returning war veterans
- Those who believe in "a Jewish-controlled 'one-world government'"
- Those who are unhappy about the election of an African-American president and the prospect of his policy changes
- Teachers of "end times" prophecies that could motivate extremist individuals and groups to stockpile food, ammunition and weapons

Future American Christian Students Uncertain As Obama Signs Stimulus Plan
Feb. 17, 2009 - One of the stipulations of the stimulus plan signed by President Obama today will end Christian activities in some college and university facilities. The rule states: - "No funds awarded under this section may be used for (3) modernization, renovation, or repair of facilities (A) used for sectarian instruction or religious worship; or (B) in which a substantial portion of the functions of the facilities are subsumed in a religious mission."
The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) says it will challenge the provision in federal court because it encourages discrimination. ACLJ chief counsel Jay Sekulow said, "This is an unacceptable provision that clearly discriminates against religious organizations that have a legal right to use those facilities." - Source: Worthy News
Conservative Groups Declare Obama's Stimulus Bill a War on Prayer
Feb. 4, 2009 - One provision of the stimulus bill that was passed by the House of Representatives last week is the prohibition of funds used for the "modernization, renovation, or repair" of facilities that allow "sectarian instruction, religious worship or a school or department of divinity." Republicans in the House opposed the bill unanimously. - "What the government is doing is discriminating against religious viewpoints," said Mathew Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel, a Washington-based nonprofit organization that works to advance religious freedom.
The Traditional Values Coalition, issued a statement complaining that President Obama is violating the right to free speech by using his stimulus plan to restrict the exercise of religion in public facilities.- Source: Fox

Arsonist intended murder at Palin's church
Jan. 29, 2009 - An arsonist set fire to Governor Sarah Palin's home church, Wasilla Bible Church, in December. There were five adults and a teen in the building at the time.
