Baghdad moving allegiance from Washington to Moscow
Oct. 22, 2012 - Iraqi prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki, recently concluded a $4.2 billion dollar arms deal with Moscow that
includes some 30 Mi-28 attack helicopters and 42 Pantsir-S1 surface-to-air missile systems. It country may also acquire MiG-29 fighter
jets and armored vehicles from Russia. Al Maliki, a Shiite, is backed by Iran as well. He claims that the deal will not have an adverse
effect on relations with the West, but analysts see this as a lack of loyalty to the U.S.

As U.S. troop 'surge' ends, setbacks pile up
Sept. 18, 2012 - After nearly two years in Afghanistan, the "surge" troops sent in by President Obama are completing their term and
returning to the U.S. However, the plan to leave Afghans fully in charge by next year is being threatened by developments there.
- The setbacks are piling up: a spasm of deadly attacks on U.S. and NATO forces by Afghan soldiers and police, including
three attacks in the last three days.

Nation set to remember 9/11 attacks
Sept. 11, 2012 - Many memorial events will be held in New York and around the country today - the 11th anniversary of
the 9/11 attacks. New York City Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano, says, "It is extremely important that people never forget what
happened on Sept. 11."
- An official commemoration will begin in New York Tuesday morning at 8:39 a.m. ET at the National September 11 Memorial plaza, an area
that once held the twin towers but now hosts two memorial pools dedicated to the attack victims.

Wave of attacks in Iraq kill at least 44
Sept 9, 2012 - Insurgents in Iraq perpetrated attacks against security forces in some 11 cities, killing at
least 44 people and wounding approximately 240 others.
- There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks but security forces are a frequent target of Al Qaeda's Iraq branch,
which has vowed to reassert itself and take back areas it was forced from before U.S. troops withdrew from the country last year.

Afghanistan Al Qaeda leader killed in NATO airstrike
May 29, 2012 - Sakhr al-Taifi, Al Qaeda's second-highest leader in Afghanistan, was killed in an airstrike conducted by the
U.S.-led NATO force.
- The airstrike that killed al-Taifi and another Al Qaeda militant took place Sunday in Kunar's Watahpur district, the coalition said.

World Trade Center nears landmark height, reaches 100 floors
April 5, 2012 - After years of planning and delays, the rebuilding of the World Trade Center is proceeding. The construction
has reached the 100th floor, and will be completed sometime next year or in 2014. When the work is finished the building will be the tallest
structure in the nation.

Karzai lashes out at U.S. over shooting probe
Mar. 16, 2012 - Afghan President Hamid Karzai complained that he is at the "the end of the rope" because the
U.S. is not cooperating with Afghanistan on their probe of a killing spree allegedly carried out by an American soldier. 16 Afghan
civilians were killed Sunday in southern Afghanistan, and some of their relatives think there must have been more than one shooter involved.
- Officials within the Afghan government told CBS News that the Afghan army chief of staff, Gen. Sher Mohammad Karimi, who accompanied
Karzai to meet with the families, said he was denied access to the accused soldier because American officials said he's in special forces.

Taliban vows revenge after US soldier allegedly kills 16 Afghan civilians
Mar. 12, 2012 - An American soldier went on a rampage in Afghanistan, going door to door and killing 16 Afghan civilians yesterday. The
name of the solider has not been released yet but he is being interrogated by military police.
The Taliban, who claimed responsibility for killing six U.S. troops last month in retaliation for the burning of Korans, vowed to "take revenge
from the invaders and the savage murderers for every single martyr."

Gingrich, Palin Blast Obama Quran Burning Apology
Feb/ 24. 2012 - Qurans that had been used to pass messages between war criminals in Afghanistan were inadvertently burned on a military
base there. An Afghan soldier shot and killed two U.S. soldiers and wounded others in retaliation for the burning. Now there is wide-spread rioting
against the U.S. on the streets of Afghanistan. President Obama issued an apology for the action Thursday morning.
GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich says Afghan President Hamid Karzi should be the one apologizing to the U.S., and that the Afghans
"do not deserve the apology of the United States."
- He was joined by Sarah Palin, who blasted the decision on her Facebook page: "Obama apologizes for the inadvertent Quran burning this week;
now the U.S. trained and protected Afghan Army can apologize for killing two of our soldiers yesterday."
