Typhoon Haiyan the biggest yet as world's tropical storms gather force
Nov. 11, 2013 - Haiyan may be strongest ever to hit land so far but as the oceans warm the power of storms is rising.
According to the US navy's warning center, JTWC, in Honolulu, winds from this typhoon were gusting at up to 235mph.
This would make it the fourth most intense tropical cyclone ever recorded and possibly the strongest to have ever hit land.
Intensity of storms has been increasing in recent years. Some scientists believe this is caused by warming of the oceans. The World Meteorological Organization
calculated that tropical cyclones killed nearly 170,000 people between from 2000 to 2010.

thousands of cyberattacks against the South in recent years, causing financial losses of about $805 million.

it has its own moon.
- That is about 200 times more distant than the asteroid "near-miss" that occurred in February - but Friday's passing space rock is more
than 50,000 times larger.

'We're 1 act away from social cataclysm'
May 21, 2013 - This week in Washington at the annual International Electric Infrastructure Security Summit, the founder of
the group, Avi Schnurr, explained that nuclear "electro-magnetic pulse" (EMP) weapon could disrupt the supply of electric power, cutting off
the supply of food and water, and paralyzing transportation, emergency services and other necessities of life. He said,
- “Governments and corporations are used to dealing with crises by experiencing them and gradually learning how to respond. EMP and severe
space weather are . . . a black swan event, which is not effectively survivable.”
Scientists and government agencies are working to improve security standards for the nation’s electric grid.

Sunspot Growing Fast: Solar Storms Possible, NASA Reporting
Feb. 25, 2013 - The sun is in the middle of an eleven-year cycle of activity. At present a huge sunspont is forming on the
surface that is large enough to swallow six whole Earths. Sunspots like this can cause massive solar flares, also known as Coronal Mass Ejections
(CMEs).
- The news about the solar flares comes after a big flare was unleashed Feb. 9 in the direction of the Earth. The 2:30 a.m. flare sparked a
violent sun eruption that hurled a wave of charged particles toward Earth at speeds approaching 1.8 million miles per hour.

Whew! Huge Asteroid Apophis Won't Hit Earth in 2036
[But smaller asteroid will have near-miss in two weeks!]
Dec. 31, 2013 -
- The Earth is safe from the giant asteroid Apophis when it flies extremely close to our planet in 2029, then returns for seconds
in 2036, NASA scientists announced today (Jan. 10). The chances of an impact in 2036 are less than one in a million, they added.
However, 2012 DA14, an asteroid discovered last year, will pass safely past Earth's surface at about 17,200 miles in the middle of February.
It will be closer to Earth than many man-made satellites.

The perfect solar storm? Sun eruptions to peak in 2013
Jan. 15, 2013 - Professor Jose Lopez, a physicist at Seton Hall University warns that the "solar maximum" - the high point of
the Sun's 11-year cycle of activity - is due this year.
- “The concern of a strong solar flare in the direction of Earth is legit. The possibility that such a Sun burst could hit Earth could
cause extensive damage as it would charge-up our electrical equipment and destroy them,”
If one of these flares comes directly toward the Earth it could be like the storm that knocked out radio communications all over the U.S. in 1958.
It could cause the malfunction of wireless networks, GPS satellites, and electric grids. The cost of the devastation could total as much as $2
trillion.

to $20 billion in losses.
- As high as the global losses were in 2012 they were still less than 2011 when the cost hit as high as $400 billion due to major
earthquakes in Japan and New Zealand and severe floods in Thailand.
