Mid-East Conflict 2000

The current unrest in the Middle-East focuses on the civil struggle between the government of Israel and its Palestinian people who want to establish a separate Palestinian state. Most of the Arab and/or Islamic nations in the area are also involved. The United States, the U.N., the European Union, and even Russia are all trying to broker peace in the region.

The current wave of violence could die out and become one of many such cycles in the area, or it could lead to more serious war. The outcome of this war could be a most welcome peace agreement.

Such a peace agreement might be just another phase in the age-old struggle between these nations, or it could be the false peace mentioned in 1 Thessalonians 5:3. While people are saying, "Peace and safety," destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. (NIV)

When Israel finally is at peace, it will be the first time since they became a nation in 1948 that they have enjoyed such security. This could cause them to lower their guard, which would set the scene for yet another war, such as the one predicted in Ezekiel 38 and 39. (Many good Bible teachers think that war is more likely at the end of the Tribulation, but it does not correspond exactly to the Battle of Armageddon.) If it does come before the Tribulation, it will most likely correspond to the 2nd Seal of Revelation 6.

The dramatic end of this great war of the 2nd Seal could produce the treaty predicted in Daniel 9:27, which many prophecy scholars identify as the beginning of the seven-year Tribulation period.

US intelligence: Israel will attack
July 20, 2001 - The CIA, which has been at the forefront of efforts to stop the current cycle of violence in Israel, is now predicting that a full scale invasion by Israel is imminent. Two things appear to be holding it back at the moment. The first is the G-8 Conference in Italy, which will end Sunday, and the second is another large terrorist attack by Palestinians. If there is another such attack, it is believed that the time will be right for a massive invasion of West Bank and Gaza Strip areas. When that happens, terrorists will be targeted, and Palestian cities will be occupied for some time.

Israeli War Plan Revealed
July 13, 2001 - The prestigious Jane's Information Group in London, says Israeli generals have a plan in case there is another massive terrorist attack against Israelis. It would involve 30,000 Israeli troops, would result in the destruction of Palestinian armed forces and the Palestinian Authority, and would force Chairman Yasser Arafat back into exile, as he was for 12 years after the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon.
They believe that Egypt, Syria and Jordan will stay out of such a war, though Iraq might get involved.
The Jane's report indicates that the plan was presented to the Israeli cabinet on July 9. It reflects a possible change in thinking in the current government; earlier governments rejected a military solution to the Middle East dispute.
But Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon dismissed the rumors of war Thursday, saying he has no plans to escalate the conflict.

Israel, changing tack, signals it views Egyptian-Jordanian peace bid as potential lifeline
Apr. 24, 2001 - Although the Israeli government has said it would never to negotiate under fire, there is some indication that the latest peace tactic, proposed by Egypt and Jordan, may be considered by Israeli officials.
In a marked turnaround from earlier statements criticizing the proposal as a "non-starter" or even denying its very existence, senior aides to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said that while Israel still had reservations about the plan for ending the Intifada and resuscitating peace talks, "there's no need for the proposal to be rejected outright."
Among the ideas set forth in the proposal, Israel would lift its closures in the territories and withdraw to positions it held prior to the seven-month-long Intifada. They would also stop new settlement activity. The Palestinians would guarantee efforts to renew security cooperation and to end violence. When the fighting has subsided, talks would resume toward a permanent agreement, aimed at reaching a treaty within a year.

Mideast future hinges on key Arabs
Mar. 20, 2001 - Next week's Arab League Summit in Amman, Jordan, is not likely to ease Mideast tensions. Analysis of the political climate by DEBKAfile intelligence sources indicate that some Arab countries may join forces with the Palestinians against Israel.
DEBKA analysts say the next-most-likely timeframes for violence are April and May-June -- violence could take the form of a wider regional war, depending on whether Arab nations not now directly involved decide to throw in with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and the few Arab leaders willing to back him already.
These alliances could lead to an escalation of the conflict and have a world-wide effect on the economy and political climate. The United States, Russia, and China are deeply involved, financially and militarily, with some of the potential belligerents.
