Assad: Israel must withdraw to 67' borders, up to Tiberias
June 3, 2008 - Exploratory talks between Israel and Syria are being characterized differently by officials of the two countries. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says that the only thing they are discussing is a return of all land captured by Israed in the Six Day War (1967).
Israeli Deputy Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz said the gap between the two sides is very wide. Iranian terrorists in Syria is a major issue to Israel. Mofaz said:

Carter: Israel possesses 150 nukes
May 26, 2008 - Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter was quoted saying that Israel has 150 nukes, and that knowledge is proof that Iran would not be able to develop such weapons in secret. Carter is in favor of a renewed push by the international community to hold direct talks with Iran about their nuclear program.

Ahmadinejad: Syria will continue to oppose the Zionist entity
May 26, 2008 - Even though Israel and Syria are conducting serious peace talks, Iran leadership says that Iran and Syria will keep close ties.
- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad met with Syrian Defense Minister Gen. Hassan Turkmani in Teheran on Monday, and expressed his certainty that Damascus would continue to stand on its previous stance of opposition to Israel.

Israel and Syria officially announce peace talks
May 21, 2008 - Indirect peace talks are taking place, brokered by Turkish mediators. A statment from the negotiators said:
- "The two sides have declared their intention to conduct the negotiations in good faith and with openness."
Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem has said that Israelis have made a commitment to withdrawal from the Golan Heights up to the June 4, 1967 border. Israeli Prime Minister Olmert's office denies that such an agreement was made.

Report: Iran's Nuclear Ambitions Fueling Mideast Arms Race
May 20, 2008 - Because of Iran's controversial nuclear program, other Middle Eastern countries are now interested in atomic energy, for energy and/or for weapons. A report from the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies warns that this interest may set the scene for a regional nuclear arms race.
- At least 13 Middle Eastern countries either announced new plans to explore atomic energy or revived pre-existing nuclear programs between February 2006 and January 2007.

Hezbollah Gunmen Seize Control of Beirut Neighborhoods, 11 Killed
May 9, 2008 - Shiite Hezbollah gunmen made a show of strength in Beirut by taking control of most of the city's Muslim sector. The sector has been controlled by Sunni Muslims loyal to the Lebanese government. The U.S. backs the government there. But Hezbollah is backed by Iran and Syria.
- The fighting could have implications for the entire Middle East at a time when Sunni-Shiite tensions are high. The tensions are fueled in part by the rivalry between predominantly Shiite Iran, which sponsors Hezbollah, and Sunni Arab countries like Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Perez: Nuclear Iran 'A Nightmare For The World'
May 5, 2008 - Israeli President Shimon Peres said he is not in favor of a military attack on Iran, but if it is to be averted, world powers must quickly impose harsh economic sanctions on Iran.

Rice Beginning New Round of Middle East Talks
May 3, 2008 - U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will be in Jerusalem today to prepare for President Bush's visit to the Middle East later this month. She spent the previous two days in London meeting with financial supporters of the peace process and the Quartet.
- The Quartet - made up of the United States, Russia, the European Union and the United Nations - reaffirmed international backing for the goal set at last November's Annapolis conference for a peace accord by the end of 2008.

Rice: Israelis, Palestinians must agree on final borders
May 2, 2008 - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is pressing both Israeli and Palestinian negotiators to determine exactly where their future borders should be. This would add much needed clarity to the struggling peace talks.

Hamas open to peace deal with Palestinian backing: Carter
Apr. 21, 2008 - Former President Jimmy Carter upset Israel and U.S. officials by meeting with Hamas Terrorist chief Khaled Meshaal. But he claims that he was told that Hamas would recognise Israel's right to live in peace if a deal is reached by Palestinians.
- Hamas would agree to such a peace deal, yet to be negotiated, provided it is "submitted to Palestinians for their overall approval even though Hamas might disagree with some terms of the agreement," Carter said in Jerusalem.

Attacks in Middle East Send Oil to Record $117.40
Apr. 21, 2008 - Rising oil prices were pushed to a record $117.40 a barrel because of three attacks. In one instance, a Japanese oil tanker was hit by a rocket near Yemen. Meanwhile, Nigerian militants attacked two oil pipelines.

Peres: Carter damaged peace process
April 14, 2008 - Former President Jimmy Carter is in Israel to try to convince Hamas leaders to support the process of peace between Israel and the Palestinians.
- Former US president Jimmy Carter was immediately criticized upon his arrival in Israel Sunday by President Shimon Peres, who told him that his plans to meet with exiled Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal were a "severe mistake."
Perez said Mashaal was an extremist and an illegitimate leader who had given orders to kill Israelis. It appears to give Hamas legitimacy when a person of Carter's status agrees to meet with them. Carter allienated Israelis in 2006 when his book, Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid, compared Israeli actions in the West Bank with the racial oppression that once reigned in South Africa.
