Days 5 and 6
DAY 5 Wed Jun 21
TEL BETH-SHEAN, SHECHEM, JERUSALEM
Region: Region: Jordan Valley, Jerusalem
Depart the Sea of Galilee for Tel Beth-shean, ancient Bible ,"Disneyland of Archaeology." It is at one of the major crossroads of ancient and modern Israel. It is about 394 ft (120 m) below sea level. Ascend the tel and recall the story of Saul, Israel's first king.
- 1 Samuel chapters 28-31 - Saul's last battle against the Philistines
- (Beth Shean, Beth Shan, Beth-shan, Bethshan, Bet she'an - "House of rest"
- 2 Samuel 21:12-14 - David reclaims the bodies of Saul and his sons
Explore the archaeology of
Scythopolis (later name for the city on the same site as Beth-shean), the only Decapolis city west of the Jordan River.
Continue via Dothan to Samaria
(Sebastiva), the royal city.
- 1 Kings 16:23-24 - Established by Omri - 6th king of Northern Kingdom (Israel) about 880 BC, when he moved there from Tirzah
- 2 Kings 17:3-6 - Conquered by Assyria in 722 BC.
Visit Tel Balata (Shechem).
- Genesis 12:6-7 - Abram's first stop in the land- "built an altar to the Lord" - promise reconfirmed to him

- Joshua 8:30-35 - Blessings and Cursing - Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal
Conditions permiting, visit Jacob's Well, where Jesus encountered the Samaritan woman.

Continue through the Bible heartland past Shiloh,
- Joshua 18:1, 10 - The first permanent place of Israel's worship in the Land (Joshua, Eli, Samuel, The Ark)
- Judges 21:19-23 - The "Valley of the Dance" where the sons of Benjamin "caught" their wives.
See the area where Bethel once stood.
- Genesis 12:8; 13:3 - Abraham "pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and... built an altar to the Lord"
- Genesis 28:12 - Jacob's vision of a ladder - Jacob called the place Bethel, "the house of God"
- Judges 20:26-27 - Ark of the Covenant there during Israel's war with Benjamin

DAY 6 Thur Jun 22
JERUSALEM, BETHLEHEM
Region: Jerusalem, Judaean Hills
Visit the Mt. Of Olives for orientation to Jerusalem's Old City.
- Acts 1:11-12 - Jesus ascended into heaven and will return to that spot
- Zechariah 14:4 - Willsplit in two from east to west, making a very large valley; half of the mountain shall move toward the north and half of it toward the south"
Walk the traditional Palm Sunday
route past the Dominus Flevit Church to the Garden of Gethsemane where we will enjoy a special
time of prayer.
- Matt. 26:30-36; Mark 14:26 - Prayer the night Jesus was captured.
Proceed to the Dung Gate and enter the Ophel Ridge to view the Herodian
pavement, the Temple foundation, and the Temple steps where we know Jesus walked and taught
(Lk 19-21).
- Luke 20:1; John 8:2; 18:20 etc. - Jesus taught in the Temple area
- Luke 23:45 - Veil of the Temple torn at Christ's death
Depart for the Judaean Hills and Bethlehem. Visit shepherds fields, the Church of the
Nativity, and take time for olivewood shopping before returning to Jerusalem.
- Ruth chapters 1-4 - Story of Ruth and Boaz
- 1 Samuel 16 - David chosen to be king
- Micah 5:2 - Prophecy of Messiah's birth
- Matthew 2 - Jesus born in Bethlehem
