Radiation and the Fourth Horseman

While the nuclear reactors at Japan’s Fukushima plant are disintegrating and releasing radiation into the air, many are asking what Bible prophecy has to say about radiation in the End Times.

This is an area where it would be unwise to be dogmatic, but there are two possible connections to nuclear destruction from the account of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Revelation chapter 6 describes the early part of the Tribulation as a vision of four riders on different colored horses. First there is the rider on a white horse (verses 1-2), a mighty conqueror and apparent messiah who appears to be able solve the world’s problems, but in reality is a false savior – the “beast” of Revelation 13, who is often called Antichrist.

The second symbolic rider comes on a red horse (Revelation 6:3-4). This speaks of the ravages of a great world-wide war. It is not likely that this war is started by the rider on the white horse, since, as the previous verses indicate, he is seen as a messianic hero.

Jesus told us that the period leading up to the Tribulation would be characterized by “wars and rumors of wars” (Matthew 24:6; Mark 13:7).

It is likely that this is the war of Ezekiel 38 and 39, which results in fiery destruction of the aggressors from the north when they try to conquer Israel. This could very possibly escalate to nuclear warfare, which involves more than one of the present-day nuclear powers. The emerging world dictator could take credit for the destruction of Israel’s invaders, or at least take advantage of the situation, to bring about the seven-year peace treaty between himself and Israel that was prophesied by Daniel. If this is the case, this war would take place at the very beginning of the seven years of the Tribulation. And, of course, if it involves a nuclear exchange, it will result in the release of unwanted radiation.

The third horse will be black, and it will bring great famine, probably as a result of the world war and continued global economic problems (Revelation 6:5-6).

The fourth horse has brings a variety of deadly situations.

When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!” 8I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth. - Revelation 6:7-8

The color of the fourth horse is translated many ways. Some Bible versions translate it as “pale,” others as “ashen,” or “pale green.” The Greek word is chloros, “greenish.” It is the root of the well known “chlorophyll”, the tiny green chemical converters in the leaves of most plants.

Chloros also suggests deadly chlorine gas, which is pale green in color and quickly fatal to all who breathe it. The intended picture here is a sickly pale green that symbolizes death as a result of the terrors of nuclear, chemical, and biological warfare.

Therefore, one of the main causes of this Fourth Horseman’s deadly mission might be radiation and the cancer that it produces. This radiation could be the result, not only of nuclear weapons, but of damaged nuclear power plants as well. And these catastrophes could be caused by terrorism or natural disasters, such as earthquakes and tsunamis.

One other possibility for the meaning of the green horse has been suggested by some Bible teachers in the light of the growing threat by Islamic radical terrorists. They wonder if the green could come from the well-known fact that Islamic countries all use green in their flags and seem to prefer that color. Time will tell if there is any connection here.

Earthquakes in Various Places

Saturday, March 12th, 2011

Ever since the monstrous 9.1 magnitude earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia in 2004, people have had a heightened awareness of the danger of seismic activity. That year, the earthquake and great tsunami claimed 227,898 lives.

Last year the Haiti earthquake devastated an entire country, killing 222,570 people and destroying most of their poorly-constructed buildings. Since then, Chile suffered an 8.8 magnitude quake, and just two and a half weeks ago a 6.3 event caused great damage in New Zealand.

And now the world is aghast at the massive destruction caused by the 8.9 magnitude quake and tsunami in Japan. Because of the way earthquakes are measured, with each higher point representing a multiplication of strength instead of an addition of strength, this tremor was actually 1000 times as powerful as the recent New Zealand disaster.

The Japan earthquake is even worse because of the potential melt-down of one or two of their nuclear reactors. One of these power plants has already suffered an explosion and release of radiation, making it the second most serious nuclear accident in history [Chernobyl in Russia was the worst].

Jesus said that one of the initial signs of the End Times will be an upsurge of earthquakes.

Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains. - Matthew 24:7-8

Until recently we have felt that the number and size of earthquakes was not increasing significantly. Geologists usually parrot the fact that the number of major earthquakes has been relatively stable during the past two decades with an average of 17 tremors per year having a magnitude 7.0 or greater. Last year there were 22 of these major events, and there have been 7 in the first 10 weeks of this year. The horrific death toll, the increased awareness, because of media coverage, and the financial impact on an already weakened world economy have brought earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis to the forefront of our consciousness.

And, as we mentioned in a blog last year (Jan. 13, 2010), it has been determined that there are at six ways that man-made activity might cause earthquakes: by nuclear tests, by building dams, by injecting water into the ground (disposal, geo-thermal power), by mining vast amounts of coal, by draining oil wells dry, and by building super-tall buildings.

In the light of other major world developments, such as the global economic malaise, the wave of Islamic nationalism in the Middle East, and the growing threat of wars and rumors of wars, we must snap out of our delusion that things are continuing the way they always have been.

First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” - 2 Peter 3:3-4

What can we do about these catastrophes? Obviously, we can’t control them. But the horror and heartache of these disasters should bring out our Lord’s compassion in our hearts so that we reach out to the survivors with our earnest prayers, sacrificial help, and increased evangelism. And we should take Peter’s advice to heart to know the Lord and live a more godly life than ever before.

Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. – 2 Peter 3:11-12

We are happy to announce that our new book, Connecting the Dots: A Handbook of Bible Prophecy, is now available as a digital/electronic book (eBook). It is already available on Amazon.com for their Kindle reader. And it is scheduled to be released soon by other eBook suppliers like Barnes and Noble for its Nook reader and Apple iBooks for the iPad.

I have been doing most of my reading on the Kindle recently because I can literally have a whole library of books in one convenient device that also lets me pick the size of the font.

Prophecy students will still want to have the printed book because Connecting the Dots is a reference manual – a notebook of sorts that you can underline and make personal notes in the margins.

However, the Kindle version is better in some ways. You can set bookmarks to favorite places. It remembers where you stopped reading and lets you continue quickly. It is lightweight, and as mentioned before, you may choose the font size that suits you best. It allows you to do a word search through the entire book. And, if you want, you can even have the Kindle read it to you with their text to speech feature that has been enabled for this book!

A great deal of extra work went into this version to enable hundreds of hyperlinks. Each chapter and subtopic in our 12-page Table of Contents is linked. Just click on the topic and the reader takes you to the section you want to read. Amazingly, the extensive index is also linked. When you find an entry in the index, you can click on the “page” number and the reader will find the proper section in the book, even though page numbers are not used in eBooks.

Lambert Dolphin and I are blessed to be able to share our passion for Bible prophecy through our book, and it is our prayer that it can be a tool to equip a new generation of Bible students and help stimulate an End-Times revival!

Egyptian Revolution

Egypt is experiencing an unprecedented uprising of resistance to the government of President Hosni Mubarak, who has led the country for almost 30 years, following the assassination of Anwar Sadat in 1981. Protests and outbreaks of riotous activity have taken place in Cairo, Giza, Suez, and Alexandria. The people are calling for the resignation of Mubarak.

The protests are apparently caused by the lack of progress in the country and the degrading living conditions of the Egyptian people. Their complaints and plans appear to have been promoted widely on Facebook and Twitter in recent days. Consequently, the Egyptian government has suspended Internet usage and cell phone service.

Egyptian police were overwhelmed by the crowd, and though they killed some protesters and arrested many more, they had to abandon their efforts. Egyptians then overwhelmed and burned the police stations.

President Mubarak finally appeared in a televised speech, saying that he supports the right of the people to express their concerns, and that he will reorganize the government. It remains to be seen if this will appease the crowds.

Commentators notice the similarity between this uprising and the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979. There is, however, a major difference. The Iranian Revolution was led by Shiite clerics, while the religious component of the Egyptian protest is the Muslim Brotherhood, which is aligned with the larger Sunni branch of Islam. The Muslim Brotherhood is the guiding force behind the Hamas Movement in the Palestinian areas.

If this revolution succeeds, the most dramatic effect might well be the termination of the peace agreement between Israel and Egypt that has been in effect for more than three decades. Relations between the United States and Egypt could be severely strained by the outcome of this revolution.

Egypt was a prominent nation in the Old Testament history of Israel, and is usually identified by prophecy scholars as the “King of the South” in End-Times prophecy (Daniel 11:21 ff.). However, Egypt is conspicuously absent in the line-up of the enemies of Israel in the upcoming war of Gog and Magog (Ezekiel 38 and 39), which we think will most likely be the same as the great war of the Second Seal in Revelation 6.

We will be watching this development with the greatest of interest.

Prophecy Conference in January

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

Solid Ground Church and KKLA will be co-presenters of a major prophecy conference at the Ontario Convention Center on January 14 and 15, 2011. The theme is “Understanding the End Times: Israel, Islam and Biblical Prophecy.”

Frank Pastore, America’s most popular Christian talk show host will broadcast his program live from the conference on Friday night from 4 to 7 p.m. It is a free event, but love offerings will be received to cover the cost of such an event. Pre-registration is necessary because, even though we will have a huge meeting space, seating is limited.

The outstanding speaker lineup includes Tim LaHaye, Chuck Missler, David Hocking, Bill Koenig, Gary Kah, Ron Carlson, Jack Hibbs, and Lambert Dolphin. I will also have the privilege of speaking, not because I belong in such company, but because I am host pastor.

We have a web page devoted to the conference at http://www.Bible-prophecy.com/conference. A beautiful poster may be downloaded and printed in any size you want. Pictures and information about the speakers is included, along with suggestions for hotels in the area that will give a “prophecy conference discount.”

The Friday night program will conclude with a powerful evangelistic message by Jack Hibbs, so be sure to bring your friends who need to hear the Gospel!

If you would like to attend, please block out Friday evening and all day Saturday and don’t forget to pre-register! There is a special toll-free phone number for this purpose, and KKLA will also have online registration during the month before the event. The number is 888-974-4242.

Is America Blessed or Cursed?

Monday, May 10th, 2010

We’re getting mixed messages from the news about how God may be feeling toward the United States these days.

Some say we are blessed because of the multiple failures of would-be mass murderers, such as the older case of the shoe bomber and two more recent botched attempts by terrorists.

Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad was apparently trained by the Taliban in Pakistan to construct a massive car bomb, but his detonation device failed to bring about the desired calamity.

Last Christmas, Abdul Farouk Umar Abdulmutallab, a 23-year old Nigerian, tried to destroy a Northwest Airlines jet over Detroit, but his detonator also failed to ignite the explosives he carried in his underwear.

It certainly is possible that The Lord Himself has intervened in these failures.

On the other hand, some of my fellow prophecy-trackers have pointed out the possible correlation between the many disasters that have plagued our country recently and the weakening of support for Israel by our administration. Unusual floods, hurricanes and tornados have stricken us, sometimes coming right on the heels of disappointments to Israel by President Obama’s policies. Now a major oil spill threatens our ecology and our economy while U.S. negotiators make harsh demands on Israel’s building programs.

Which is it? Is God blessing us or cursing us? Could it be a little of both to remind us of the ancient, unchanging, covenant with Abraham? Let’s all read it again and ponder what it means for our nation in these last days.

1 The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.
2 “I will make you into a great nation
and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you.”

2012 and the Apocalypse

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

The movie “2012” was the ultimate action movie. The special effects were numerous and amazing throughout the show. It was based on the fact that the Mayan calendars end at 2012, and the assumption that this would mean that the Earth would be destroyed at that time.

According to Mayan historians this date would not be the end of the world, but just the end of their long cycle of time based on their study of the stars. The Egyptians had similar beliefs about this cycle. Both cultures were aware of the fact that the position of the constellations changes very slowly over time, due to the tilt of the Earth’s axis. The time it would take for the Constellations to make a complete cycle would be nearly 26,000 years. At the end of that cycle the Earth and Solar System would supposedly be aligned with the galactic plane of the Milky Way.

The movie revolves around the idea that huge explosions on the surface of the Sun, known as Coronal Mass Ejections (CME) will increase because of this alignment of our Solar System with the Milky Way Galaxy. These CMEs might supposedly cause overheating of the Earth’s core and result in worldwide disaster.

“2012” is great entertainment, but it should not be taken seriously either from a scientific or a biblical point of view. NASA, the preeminent authority on space science says that there is no scientific reason for these dreaded events to take place. They have posted a special website to answer questions about the movie’s claims.

In the movie, one person explained that many cultures and religions had come to similar conclusions about the coming disaster. He added that even the Bible agreed – sort of. The truth is, the Bible doesn’t tell the same story. The only biblical evidence given was from the so-called Bible Codes, which has already been discounted by most Bible scholars. The Bible does predict great disasters, such as earthquakes and meteor collisions. But these things will not destroy the Earth. They will be judgments from God, but the Earth will still be inhabited when Jesus returns as King of Kings and Lord of Lords (Revelation 19).

What the movie does do for Bible prophecy is to illustrate how world-wide disasters can develop quickly in the future. It also shows how some of the events of Noah’s flood might have taken place.

UFOs and Prophecy

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

It’s a big week in the entertainment world for Unidentified Flying Objects. The first episode of ABC’s “V” was shown, updating the alien-invasion series of the ‘80s. Later this week a new movie, “The Fourth Kind,” will focus on the most intense fear about UFOs – abduction.

During the past half-century there have been thousands of supposed sightings of UFO’s and rumors of secret information hidden from the public by the government. There have even been claims of alien abductions. Amazingly, polls indicate that about 1/3 of Americans believe in UFOs, although some of them substitute belief in aliens for belief in God.

The History Channel produced a series called “UFO Hunters.” Numerous other documentaries explore related topics like the Air Force’s “Project Blue Book,” which is now available online, and the mysterious unofficial military base known as “Area 51.”

Could this interest in UFOs relate to Biblical prophecy? One possible connection would be an explanation of the sudden disappearance of Christians at the Rapture. For millions of people the loss of friends and loved ones will be a final proof that The Bible is true. For them, the Rapture will be a turning point leading them to personal acceptance of Christ.

But for the rest of the world, some false theory will have to be proposed to keep them from turning to the Lord. In 2 Thessalonians 2 we discover some of the details of the coming of Antichrist.

9 The coming of the lawless one will be in accordance with the work of Satan displayed in all kinds of counterfeit miracles, signs and wonders, 10 and in every sort of evil that deceives those who are perishing. They perish because they refused to love the truth and so be saved. 11 For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion so that they will believe the lie 12 and so that all will be condemned who have not believed the truth but have delighted in wickedness.
2 Thessalonians 2:9-12 - NIV

It is certainly possible that Antichrist’s lie about the Rapture will be that, after all these years of being observed by powerful but kindly aliens, Christians have been taken away from earth by aliens because they were not willing to be “tolerant” of people with different morals or beliefs.
